From There to Here…

Travel

This past June we had the great pleasure of cruising aboard the Norwegian Breakaway from New York City to Bermuda. I first cruised 30+ years ago and didn’t recall the experience of sailing in and out of New York Harbor from that trip so I made it a point to get up early during our return to capture the sights.

As I stood near the bow of the ship I tried to place myself as one of the 12 million immigrants that arrived in America many years ago. What an experience it must have been.

I hope these pictures give you an idea of this experience……

Here we are approaching the Verrazzano Bridge. Named after the ltalian explorer who declared this area a lake in the early 1500’s.

Here our 17 story cruise ship narrowly makes it under the said named bridge…

Next we start to get a glimpse of the entrance to New York harbor….

No need to explain this gorgeous sight…

As we cruise towards the dock we pass Jersey City to our west and see the last of our sights from the cruise….

Our vacation will terminate at the ships terminal on pier 88.

Have You Been Inspired Lately?

Still Life

For a few weeks I was lacking the inspiration to go shooting. I had that mindset that I’ve been to these places so many times, what the hell am I going to shoot? Nothing but the same….

Well this feeling quickly left me after watching a few posts by Joel Grimes. He was posting about a new endeavor, photographing still life. He showed an amazing grid of flowers. Specifically nine shots of vibrant flowers arranged in a grid. My first reaction was wow! It was gorgeous. A variety of floral arrangements with bright, complimentary backgrounds.

My second reaction was- that’s got to be hard to photograph those “fake” flowers and make them so lifelike. I began to study each arrangement and thought that I might be able to pull it off. It can’t be that expensive to obtain a few flowers, right?

Finally I had to think about my photoshop skills and did I have the ability to pull it off in post? I gave it a shot and now I’m starting a series of fine art still lifes.

Here is one of my first five produced…… I really like it!

I’ve done a bunch of binge watching of photoshop videos on blending and layers and grouping and that has helped quite a bit.

This is available for print in a variety of sizes. Please contact me if your interested in improving the decor in your home. Thanks for stopping by!

Oh, I’m glad I found inspiration in Joel’s creation, thanks Joel!

Something I’ve not Done Much of…

Landscapes, Nature

Panorama’s are a genre of photography that I’ve attempted very little. It’s probably evident in the photo below but I gave it a try anyway.

The sky last night was just too awesome not to shoot. I shoot this with my camera in landscape orientation and now wish I’d turned it vertical. Incorporating more of the lake and pier(which is absent in this shot) would have made this even better. Well, there’s always next time right? That might be tonight!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Hey, Quick… Pull Over!

Landscapes, Lighting, Nature

So we were returning home from a July 4th weekend party when suddenly the skies started to light up. We were making our way through Allaire State Park and I remembered a favorite spot that might have some foreground interest to further enhance this emerging sky. Sure enough the horses were out grazing and all I had to do was position one or some of them firmly in the scene.

After several attempts I came up with this….

A beautiful shot, a result of being in the right place at the right time!

As always, prints are for sale!

The Lure of Iconic Places…

Street Photography, Travel

Last weekend I went on another trek of downtown Manhattan and although I’ve taken a few shots of the Brooklyn Bridge I’ve never been on it.

My photog partner, Dave Gardiner, endured the walk with me to have my chance at seeing this  iconic lower Manhattan landmark. I was a bit hesitant because I’ve seen thousands of shots from there and was wondering “does the world need another shot of the BB”? Well, we went anyway and I’m glad we did…..

So, I’m wondering how you all feel about landmarks such as this….. do you go anyway? Do you shot it and do you really try to get “the shot” completely different than seen before? Let us know!

Spring Has Sprung…..

Digital Art, Themed 365 Project, Weather

…sort of.

Warm on Thursday, freezing on Sunday.

We want it to be here and it’s here,  sort of…

It’s showing all over.

Abstract or not we know what it is.

Just a few weeks and we’ll be in shorts on a regular basis.
