Happiness Is…
Having 2 kids that cooperated during my Christmas card photo shoot. I’ll post my other daughter tomorrow.
I was just reading a blog post in which the blogger was talking about getting away from rectangular photos in favor of square shots. I think this is a perfect example as to why square works so well, I love how it works with my daughter off center in the picture. What do you think? Have you ever tried it? If you have why not embed a link in your comment for all to see?
And for those B+W naysayers, you’ve got to admit this works pretty well in B+W. Right?
Weathered…
As I was walking around the neighborhood with my daughter and her friend for Halloween I noticed this lone leaf perched atop a sewer. I immediately noticed the contrast of color and shapes and knew it was a keeper as long as I could snap it before the wind blew it away.
As far as processing goes this was a quick one. 1. Exported to elements for some cloning and high pass sharpening (seems to be popular in many posts lately) 2. Back to lightroom for a graduated filter adjustment for brightness and 3. added a vignette to finish it off.
Shot settings: F6.7, 1/180 sec, iso 200 at 145mm
Friday Scavenger Hunt…
For Fridays “scavenger hunt”, no I didn’t fly out (over the weekend) to Vegas to get this shot but I did hunt through my catalog to find something to post. The City Center is a perfect spot to get shots of geometric shapes and lines.
Added a fancy, blurred sky and converted to B+W in Lightroom.
Shot settings: f5.6, 1/500th sec, iso 100 at 21mm
Discovery

One of the first places I discovered indoors was the lobby of the Vdara. The Vdara is part of City Center and right away you can see how the interior design matches the concepts of the exterior. The Vdara is a residential condo, coop, timeshare complex(?) and it is attached directly to the Aria Resort and Casino.
My brother was explaining to me the whole concept of the city center and strip and about all I understood was that , unfortunately, with the economy the way it is( I hope I explain this correctly) there is enough residential space available for the NEXT 40 YEARS! In essence, they believe it will take 40 years to fill all the residential space built along the Las Vegas strip. OOPS!

Here are the same files with a conversion to b&w. These shots were inspired by photos taken by John Barclay and although they are not taken of the same building are quite similar. Find them here.

As is always the case when arriving in Vegas I was up before the sun. It has it’s advantages in some cases as I was able to get this shot between the towers at The Signature at MGM.
This is a single shot without any processing except for a slight vignette. I really like the look of this shot!

This shot certainly provides a visual representation of the definition of geometric. Webster’s defines geometric as: of or relating to art based on simple geometric shapes (as straight lines, circles, or squares)
